On leaving the tram Hefeld and Jacob jumped on board a milk cart while the owner, Mr George Conyard, was in a nearby shop. Mr Conyard came out to investigate and was shot in the arm and chest. The robbers then lashed the horse and set off in the direction of Epping Forest, still firing erratically at their pursuers. PC Zeithing was shot through his coat, and P.C. Rushbrooke's bicycle was damaged by bullets. Hefeld and Jacob overturned the milk cart on a corner, abandoned it, and stole a cart belonging to Mr Thomas White, a greengrocer, at gunpoint. Jacob drove the greengrocer's card while Hefeld sat on the tailboard, firing at anyone who came close. Their route took in the Crooked Billet, Forest Road, where Hefeld aimed a shot at PC Adams who was passing by on foot. PC Adams joined in the chase, boarding the car which was still chasing the criminals.
Hefeld fired at civilian Mr Thomas Brown, tearing his trousers, and at PC Francis and PS Jowitt who were on point duty at Hagger Bridge. Bullets passed between the two policemen and the side window of 849 Forest Road was shot out. The robbers travelled towards Wood Street but went across wasteland to Wadham Road to avoid being intercepted by police, not realising that one of the cart's wheels was running dead and the brake was still on. Despite lashing the poor horse, Jacob was therefore unable to increase his speed.
In Wadham Road the car carrying police, and also Thomas Brown and a man with a breech-loading gun, was still following the cart. The armed man handed his gun to Mr Brown, who fired at the robbers, wounding them. The road became steeper, and the robbers then abandoned the cart upon reaching Winchester Road and, despite their wounds, made their way towards the railway arch that runs across Ching Brook where the footpath converged into a high fence bordering newly built houses. The robbers were cornered. Hefeld had only two bullets left, and urging Jacob to save himself, he then shot himself in the head, but not fatally. He was overpowered and driven by the police to the Prince of Wales Hospital, Tottenham. |
